THE MEANING OF LITERATURE

What is literature?

Literature is a term used to describe written or spoken material. Broadly speaking “Literature” is used to describe anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific works.

Literature refers to works of the creative imagination, including works of poetry, drama, and fiction and non-fiction.

Generally, Literatureis a work of art expressed in words, using language creatively to express human realities.

ORIGINAL OF LITERATURE

The origin of literature is tied up with the origin of man and the development of language. The subsequent development of man and human society was determined by the development of the labor process. Speech developed as a result of the labor process in the various social movements. The development of language, its different forms and functions was result of the development and differentiation of labor process bringing about the evolution and differentiation of human experience.

Initially, language development was determined material activity. Later, with the development of the abstract thought there emerged styles and registers which were different in form and functions from the former.

The artistic form and special use of language was a product and reflection of the development of a special category of mental power in man which associated with creating, communicating and perceiving artistic images, aesthetic and consciousness

The emergence of literary works was due to the mastery and use of language rules in more artistic way. That is to say one can produce or write literary work if he/she is competent in the particular language that he/she wants to write.  Basically, literature deals with the burning issues in a given society like love, political issues, social- economic matters and the like.
